Hey guys.
I have seen it a million times, but have never figured it our, or maybe i have but just haven't made is as good.
What effect makes the hot air illusion effect? like over a fire u can see the air is moving and stuff (irl).
The effect that was used in the HFU2 trailer when the UFO is landing.

That's Displacement. Its an effect also commonly used for invisibility. Basically, it requires two layers of footage. The displacement effect warps the first layer based on the color data of the second layer. This video discusses Displacement and explains how to set it up:

Yeah, so in the case of the UFO landing, I used the particle effect of the engines to displace the background footage.
Displacement is massively, massively useful and versatile.
