Error 'Invalid Media' when trying to import .avi files
I just installed HitFilm 4 Express on my Dell XPS 13 laptop and when I try to import an avi file I get a Invalid Media error - The media could not be imported. I tried copying to the local drive but get the same message. Also tried importing different ways; drag, search etc but get the same message. Mov files from the same drive import fine.
I am running Windows 10 on an i5-6200U with 8GB of ram

@DougBarwell I'm not certain but sometimes files get created with a setting that Hitfilm doesn't like especially MOV and AVI in my experience. I woukd try to use a free program called XMedia Recode to re encode the AVI to their format of AVI and if it imports. Or, use VirtualDub to transcode it to Cineform using the settings @NormanPCN has posted on here. On my phone at the moment and having a hard time finding the thread or I would link it.

If you just installed Hitfilm 4 Express, then you installed something very old. You should be using the current version of Hitfilm Express.
Your AVI file is probably using a codec not supported by Hitfilm. Given it is an AVI file, it could very well be one of those wierdo codecs out there. You would need to transcode that media to a more normal/common format.
MOV files can contain many weird codecs but more commonly they contain AVC video and that works with Hitfilm. It may not perform well editing for various technical reasons.
To transcode to Cineform here is a link to the forum thread on the topic.
Here is a video that discusses video media and editing. It references and has links to the various forum threads on transcoding.
