audio waveforms won't show up in new "slide" until I pause
When I am in the editor, and I am heavily zoomed in, I should be able to play and have the audio wave forms and the thumbnails for the video render automatically. Instead, I have to pause it every time the cursor hits a new slide.
I recorded this:

That's normal behavior for HitFilm. Nothing to do with your system. While it would be nice at times to have the waveforms and thumbnails update while playing, my guess is that they're not generated until pausing in order to save system resources for rendering to the viewer. Does it really save that much? I have no idea. Maybe one of the devs could clarify?

Bingo.
