Why does pausing the "viewer" cause Hitfilm Express to crash?

Hello. I just started using Hitfilm Express, and it's crashing like clockwork on the same actions.

1: Load Hitfilm Express

2: Import video file to be edited ("trimmer" on the left and "viewer" on the right pull up the frame of the video at this time)

3: Dialog box appears "Editing Sequence doesn't match the file you're adding", selecting "yes" or "no" on this box didn't make a difference for me

4: Zoom into the video track to clip out the first few seconds of the video

5: Click "play" on the "viewer" to find where my speaking begins

6: "Viewer" doesn't play the video, but audio is going

7: Click "pause" on the viewer, the entire program locks up and crashes a few seconds later

The "trimmer" will play and pause without crashing the program, but the media tracks don't follow the Trimmer, so I can't use it very well for slicing clips and stitching them together. What's up with the Viewer frame that it's making the program crash?
