Which older version of HitFilm Express gave me the ability to place an image over a subject's head?

I have this meme thing I had in mind, and when I was making it, this involves placing an image of (let's say, a cartoon character) on top of a subject's head (like from a funny skit or a movie scene), shown below as an example.

(Heads of Yu and Alfonso from the Animal Crossing Movie pasted on an image of Shaun and Ed from Shaun of The Dead.)

Problem being, the latest HitFilm Express does NOT work well with my computer as it ended up crashing upon startup, giving the same error dialog.

I really wanted to make this meme thing so badly. I've tried the 'tried-and-true' method of pasting the same image on every frame in Camtasia Studio, and it already is a lot of work, even for a one-minute video. I wanna move on from that, and I wanna see how this technique would work.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR REFERENCE

Model: Dell Vostro 5460

Operating System: Windows 10 20H2 (64 bits)

RAM: 8GB

Processor: Intel i5 3337U 1.80GHz

Total VRAM: 10GB.

For a few years (at least since 2017 according to the video linked below), it's likely been possible to do what you want using motion tracking. The video below shows how to set up motion tracking so that some text and an arrow follows the movement of the ball moving around on the screen but I suspect that would also work fine to place a cartoon character on someone's face and have Hitfilm track the movements. Hope this helps.

Akiddo, yes, you broke the quote function. :-)

Back to the issue at hand, I did a brief research and Film Sensei (Jay Haynes) did a tutorial of tracking within HitFilm in March 2018 likely ran either the then latest version or the previous version available then.

He did a great tutorial for beginners on how to do tracking and it's done through the composite layer. Even then, it was pretty straightforward to do.

Also, in my search que, I spotted another video on motion tracking with HF, from 2011 so it's been available quite a few years and I don't see it being deprecated as it's still a valid feature today. I run HF 2021.2 (17) as my PC is under spec for the latest version. 2021.2 may just be on the edge and thus I can get away with using it without too much trouble, as long as I don't get too fancy.

BTW, your computer is below spec for HT 18 (2021.3 Patch) as they are now up to the 6th gen processors, for the Core I series and yours is from 2013, Ivy Bridge, that means, 2016 and above, and you must be running Windows 10. 8GB of RAM is the bare minimum they spec, I run 16GB on mine. You don't say what your graphics card is, but you do say it has 10GB of VRAM. All graphics cards need to be I think 2017 or later, or the NVIDIA 10XX series cards with at least 4G onboard if I recall.

Either way, you can drop back to the versions from 2018, it looks like to do motion tracking.

    @littlehausbigcity provided useful links.

For your specs, you should probably try Hitfilm 12. Your CPU is under spec for every version of Hitfilm after 4, but HF 8 and up are the only versions you can still get a license for.

For the record, tracking a clip and pasting a head over the track can be done in any version of Hitfilm.

Point tracking comes standard in HitFilm Express and has been virtually the same for every version of Express that’s readily available. It should be able to do what you want it to.

Technically, your specs were depreciated around version 13 or 14.

12.3 should run fine. You might be able to push it to version 14 or 15. 16+ is almost certainly a no. If you can’t run 11, you need a new computer, full stop.
