Time to upgrade the laptop?

Hi all,

Long time lurker etc...

Struggling with laggy preview window in Hitfilm Express 2021.1

A 3.5 min MP4 file from my Sony A5100 is 1.23GB - reduced down to 44MB using Handbrake by following this:

This has had mixed results - if I set framerate to be 24 fixed it seems to help if I set the preview to low quality.

First thing - concerned about how much quality is being lost in the conversion - can anyone help here?

At some point I'll want to work with 4K - time to upgrade the laptop?

Current spec: ASUS Zenbook UX303UA 13.3 inch Notebook (Intel Core i7-6500U, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Integrated Graphics, Windows 10)

Looking at this:

Any thoughts?

I found that RAM size is critical in this work. 16 GB seems small. Are you planning to do all work on that single SSD drive?

The gaming requirements and video production requirements are not the same. You can always use game setting to accommodate less powerful hardware. This is not really possible with video editing. There is good reason that Nvidia has 2 sets of drivers: gaming and studio.

I abandoned laptops long time ago as I found hardware limitations interfering with my work.
