I've always been one for Visual Effects, but recently I've started to love Practical Effects,
Which do you prefer?

Visual Effects
I prefer visual effects as there are more options but I am impressed with practical effects. Obviously it depends on how well done both are but I like the ingenuity and, of course, the immediacy of practical effects.

Muzzle Flash - Visual
I like both, but I'm working on some war stuff, so I'm in a practical phase 😁

True but I have seen some great practical muzzle flashes using cotton wool and point lights. I prefer visual explosions but, again, cotton wool explosions can be done really well. Both need to fit the style and, of course, you can mix them. It's a really interesting area (especially for VFX software poll 😀).

Practical where possible, visual where necessary, for instance, a practical set with visual extension, or the use of practical miniatures or props with visual enhancements, (look at LOTR )

I like the question but I won't vote because both have their place depending of a lot of parameters.
As long as you don't work with a person who always says : "We'll fix it in postproduction"

Visual, I just love the endless possibilities it brings

Can't answer this because "it depends."
For certain types of effects - background replacements, set extensions, etc - VFX work better.
For certain types of effects, it doesn't matter much - either will look good.
For others - gore and many creature shots - practical just looks better. Digital blood hits always look utterly fake as they dissapate before reaching the ground, and too many digital creatures are animated without proper consideration for mass.

I really like both visual and practical effects, but what makes me prefer visual effects is that they give you the chance to control how they behave in ways that you just can't do with practical effects!
