How to do a skin peeling effect

I am trying to do a very confusing effect,
I want to be able to make an effect where it looks like the actors skin is peeling/falling off to reveal the skull ( a 3d model) underneath.
NOTE: If this is in the wrong Category I am sorry, I didn't know where to put this post, Sorry 😐️

It's not the wrong category, but the thread title is more confusing than the effect you're asking about. :) I'm going to change it to match your question more directly.
That aside, this isn't really a confusing effect, but it's definitely a complex effect. Unfortunately, I've never tried anything this complex, so I don't have any specific guidance to offer. One thing to consider, though, is that a mix of practical effects and VFX might work better than VFX alone. It's easy to think that VFX alone can solve anything, but a combination of both shouldn't be overlooked.
How gory do you want this skin peeling effect to be?

I do not want it very gory, it is for a short film for a kid so...

For the skull.
For the head/skull
Use a fractal noise as a matte to make the head go away, NO BLOOD NEEDED 😀 As in this video, at the transitions part, think of the lego effect as your head.
Good luck!

@georgefilmltd Great suggestion! I was thinking much more realistic, which would be a more complex setup. For a kids project, a simple fractal noise dissolve would work great.

@georgefilmltd Have to agree 100% with CleverTagline above. I was thinking much, much too literally about peeling away layers (so not safe for kids) and never even thought to consider your approach. Very elegant really.
