Refined Lightning

I was watching this tutorial and it used lightning to create a procedurally generated grid.  However i can't get the lightning complexity to work.  Does anyone want to shake a stick at replicating it?

You can't follow that tutorial exactly, because Hitfilm's Lightning doesn't have a "complexity" setting like AE.
So--let's take the idea of simplifying lightning to make a grid-like thing. What else could we try? Mosaic would force things into right angles. Take Kramer's tutorial and try different things. :-)
  • I tried my best, I think that hit film's lightning may not be capable of this. It is important to remember that After Effects has been in the market for 21 years, hitfilm has only been here for 3 years. Hopefully we can look forward to this in later versions. There may be a way to do an effect with a similar basis with some creativity.

    I haven't followed Kramer's tutorial, but here's a quick test using lightning to create a circuit-board-like visual:

I've attached the (slightly messy) project file.

Simon--I don't see your project file.
Here's one I did--yes, it all starts with lightning.

Caleb- You, Simon and T23 just gave me an idea to improve on the grid room from my Catalyst vid. Thanks guys!
That means more work to do......and I'm thanking you?  @-) Thanks guys!!!!! :((          :)

That happened with me on the Particle Invasion: LA shot--y'all kept challenging me to make it better.
    You're welcome.
The animation I posted actually cheats a little bit--that final animation takes four test renders I had done of a glowing grid using differing effects to transform the lightning, and I brought in the test renders, made 'em 3D planes, set them to ADD blend and moved my camera around. I'll post the project file here, but, when you open it, it will be mad that there's missing video files.
Don't worry about it--the potential interest here is how I manipulated my lightning differently than Andreew Kramer or Simon Jones--just to show that you can take a Videocopilot tutorial and use that as a starting point to make your own thing.
