Choppy video during editing on a good laptop.

A little tech info first:

I'm running Hitfilm Express 13.1.9319.49035

The laptop: ASUS ROG Strix G7318G with the following specs:

  • Intel® Core i7-9750H Processor
  • RAM: 16 GB / Storage: 512 GB SSD
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB
  • Full HD display / 144 Hz

I'm not running anything else at the same time (beyond the usual background processes) and as I playback my edit in 1080p 24fps the video is as choppy as hell. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can improve the performance?

I am right in thinking this shouldn't be an issue with this machine aren't I?

@Boffin Your machine should be good to go with HF.   That said, it would be helpful to know more  about your footage.

If you could post the View, Tree output from MediaInfo that would be great.

My guess is your footage is Variable Frame Rate and you should transcode to Constant Frame Rate for editing.   A lot of people use a free utility called HandBrake for that.

In the meantime, try changing the settings under the Viewer window (go to the drop down to the right of Options) and set that to Full, Playback Quality to Draft, Paused Resolution to Full and Paused Quality to Draft.   If that doesn't help then lowering those settings even further may improve performance.  Just note that the lowest settings will ignore effects you have applied to your footage.
