Kirstie's NAB Diary

KirstieTKirstieT StaffAdministrator, Moderator, Website User Posts: 1,056 Staff
OK guys - so you may be aware (if you've been paying attention) that some of the FXHOME team are going be at NAB this year! Coinciding with the announcement of our HitFilm Plugins, this is looking to be one of the most exciting trips we've ever taken.
While Simon holds down the fort in Norwich and keeps you all updated with new info on the plugins through the HitFilm.com blog, I'll be doing my own little NAB diary on this thread to make sure you don't miss any of it!
For four days I'll be joining thousands of people down in the pit of madness known as the NAB convention, tweeting out some of the products and announcements which catch our eye and finding a few scarce minutes at the end of each jam-packed day to write you an update on here. You might even see a few more informal photos of the FXHOME staff as well (maybe) :)
Hopefully this way we'll be able to keep you all in the loop for this global show - even if you aren't able to make it to our FXHOME meetup (which, by the way - will be happening on Monday 7th April at 10pm at the West Wing Bar, Las Vegas). If anyone wants to come and see Tom present HitFilm integration with Sony Vegas, come on down to the Sony stand (C11001) on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 1-2pm.
If you do think you'll be able to come along, do let us know so we can keep our eyes peeled for you.
We're going to be rushed off our feet - but by getting a bit of discussion going around this NAB thread then hopefully we can take the HitFilm community with us all the way to Las Vegas! (Electronically, of course - unless you've got a spare plane ticket bashing around)
And so it begins.....

Eye peeling....is that a new plug-in effect?
Looking forward to your updates! I'm excited and I can't even attend. :(
Some candid shots of the FXhome team would be awesome!

Yeah, I think eye-peeling is in the "Distort" group, right below "booger-blow" why there's a "booger-blow" filter is beyond ne, as one could get a similar effect by altering the colors of a blood splatter...
    Yes, sometimes I am juvenile.
    Safe flight, Kristie and compatriots!

Wow - if only booger blow was in fact an effect. People would come flocking :P
Well the whole team has arrived safely (although we did have a little bit of a wobble in terms of the airplane descent where we hit some turbulence and spent about 10 minutes deep breathing and concentrating very hard on anything but our stomachs).
Flight entertainment was good and the whole team made it through an impressive selection of films including 47 Ronin, Walter Mitty, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, August:Osage County, and loads more. For a 10 hour flight we were relying pretty heavily on the movies.
Brief plane story includes me sleeping on the pull down desk thing in front of me and almost having my neck snapped by the woman in front who violently shoved her seat backwards and trapped my head. Good times.
So we made it to the hotel without a scratch, spruced up a bit and, not content with already being knackered we decided to stay out until midnight Vegas time to make sure we were in the best place to tackle our jet lag. A few cocktails and a meal later (steak, an absolute must in Vegas I'm told) we wandered on over to the Bellagio and took a few pictures. Josh and Tom have been to Vegas before but for the rest of us it's all new!
Today we'll be setting up everything we need for NAB as it'll be a bright and early start on Monday, and making the most of our rest days. Let me know if you have any suggestions as to where the FXHOME team should go and what we should try out.
Provided everything goes to plan, we'll also be having dinner with an old, now very YouTube famous friend (let the guessing begin!) If we do, we'll be sure to put up some pictures for you all.
If you're wanting to keep up with our photos, be sure to take a look at this Dropbox link where I'll be sticking a few of the best :)

Kirstie NAB diary.... hmm is this your first time in Vegas?  I can easily see diary being like the Hangover...  Here is the Diary that I expect.
Day 4 of NAB... What happened to the last couple of days?  I remember flying in and checking in to the hotel and then going for a pint.  Someone suggested getting Tequila and that's all I remember.  Woke up to my head being shaved, Im in Utah and apparently I have a husband that has 8 other wives now.  FML.

Actually - Ryan Connolly! In about 2 minutes :)
And Michael James - yes, yes it will be exactly like that!
  • Triem23Triem23 Moderator Moderator, Website User, Ambassador, Imerge Beta Tester, HitFilm Beta Tester Posts: 18,270 Ambassador
Ryan Connolly? I'd have guessed Freddie Wong--Especially since the Film Riot guys just did the new promo videos for Adobe! We know Ryan Connolly considers Hitfilm a fantastic tool, but he's always been more of an AE guy!
As far as drinking goes, if you're the type who enjoys experimenting with different flavors--particularly is you like fruit in your booze, I'd recommend blipping down to the Tropicana and hoping Dexter is working at Beach Cafe. Best bartender in Vegas, IMHO. (Tell him Mike and Laura sent you and he'll take care of you... Ok, you don't know who Laura is, but if you just say "They're great, and Mike's shoulder healed up really well!" you can fake it--and he'll take care of you.)
Don't end up in Utah. That's bad....

We managed to avoid Utah - and as far as the marriages go MichaelJames, I think I'm doing quite well at this point with only 2 new husbands acquired ;) But seriously on that note, Josh and I were discussing drive through pharmacies in the taxi and was recommended to go and people watch at one of the drive through chapels. It's definitely tempting - we've already seen a few newlyweds walking around the casinos!
To recap the FXHOME team's rest day yesterday for you all, first the team treated ourselves to a slap up breakfast in the Vdara - poached eggs, canadian bacon and muffins were had by all. Then we had to take a detour to T mobile and set up a SIM card or two for the convention, seeing as there isn't wifi in the convention centre and we wanted to be able to keep tweeting and staying in touch with the community throughout the day. We originally went to Best Buy and was told to go to "T mobile - who are just next door". Being British, we left the store and looked straight to our right, seeing everything BUT a T mobile. We wandered around for a bit before asking directions and finding out that T mobile was actually a good 4 blocks away - the US equivalent of next door. So we went on a walking adventure for a bit, and had our first experience of jay walking. You can't beat the real experiences!
We spent almost the rest of the day (until about 7) just walking up and down the strip, soaking up Vegas. I've never known anywhere like it - to go around a corner not knowing what the heck kind of building you're going to see. Our walk was made even better by the appearance of some beloved characters who weren't quite taking care of themselves:
An out of shape Spiderman who was simply loitering in a corner doing some off balance karate style moves, a mangy Wookie who'd seen better days - and by the look of his costume most likely a spin dryer who made his signature sound with such sadness that our little Star Wars hearts broke a little for him, and a masculine Marilyn Monroe who had embarrassingly got her heel caught in the signature grate and was trying to pull it out. I can't remember the name of the burger place we went to, but it was a typical American diner and the food was incredible. It was so nice to be out of some of the places where you could smoke indoors - something we're not used to at all.
We passed by a casino on the way back and had our first experience of gambling in one of the casinos. One $50 bet on black left rolling for 3 turns ended up quadrupling my money and left me pretty giddy by the end. Not wanting to sully my amazingly lucky first try, we quickly hurried away from the lights and collected our money, fearing just sitting there for the rest of the day and losing it all again.
Finally, we met up with Ryan Connolly, his wife and Tim Connolly for a great meal in The Venetian. Ryan has done so much for HitFilm over these last few years, we really wanted to treat him and thank him for all his support.
There was so much laughing going on that we had to give up by midnight with our plates half eaten and even the wine half drunk because we just hadn't felt safe enough to drink without spraying it back all over the table.
It gave us an opportunity to chat about the HitFilm plugins, the last Express giveaway and the things Ryan is planning on doing over the next few months or so. We've been told that he's going to be making an appearance at the NAB show today and tomorrow as well so if any of you are wanting to come and say hello, just keep an eye out! I've put some photos from this meeting on Dropbox as well if you're interested: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/in1az3q0tkc7idb/ptCiVZK6Bu
Today is looking to be a really busy one - we're starting at about 9:30 and will likely be out until midnight tonight. We'll keep you in the loop for the HitFilm presentation today at 1pm, and hopefully will see a few of you at the FXHOME drinks tonight!

Cheers for the tip by the way Triem - if we spot the Beach Cafe we'll definitely try it out. There are so many hundreds of bars it's really great to know which is the best - we're only guessing at the moment!

Kirstie- Congrats on the gambling win and the meet with Ryan. I can see why you wouldn't get much eating done with the comedy playing out at that table. Your quips here certainly cracked me up. Truly exciting stuff!
Although, I did find it a bit ironic that a Brit who came to an American city had Canadian bacon. (I wonder if they just call it bacon in Canada, eh?)
"Right next door"- in my part of the country, anyway, means just that.....not 4 blocks away! If that's the standard, then I'm just a couple miles down the road from you in Wisconsin. I'm actually 1,785.59 miles (or 2,873.62 km) away.
My employer blocks dropbox so I will have to look at the pics later tonight provided I get the critter out of the wall of my house early enough in the evening. Any bets as to what I've got? Chipmunk- squirrel- raccoon- opossum? Wait- I'm not making bets with you.......you'd ending winning and taking my $$$!!!! :))
The comic book & movie characters sound sad, though. Spidey and Chewie should take better care of themselves.
I'd tell you to have fun but you're already there and beyond!
T23- Quit grossing me out, I'm trying to eat lunch and I've got enough horror shows in my head! I'd rather end up in Utah than that place where everyone thinks they're prostitutes and argue about it all day. You know- Idaho. No, no- Idaho. No, no- Idaho. ;)  Just kidding folks from Idaho. What do you expect from a cheese head?

Drive through pharmacies?!?!?! Like we don't have enough people on drugs on our roads already. sheesh.

Yeah, right next door actually means "right next door" here in Washington - 4 blocks away would be "just down the road."  I think whoever gave you directions was either confused about the actual location of the T•Mobile store, or had just been in Vegas too long.
  • MichaelJamesMichaelJames Website User Posts: 2,038 Enthusiast
In Vegas on the strip, next door means anything on the same half of the strip as you.

I thought Vegas was where everyone was a prostitute! Room-service call-girls, with even the hotels selling the shirts with the phone numbers of the hooker agency! And, of course the copious amounts of free porn littering the streets from 10pm till 6am. :-/
So, congrats to FX Home for getting some effects built into Vegas 13. It's good exposure for you guys, but, like Win, I'm a bit disappointed in the Vegas 13 announcement. Nothing terribly exciting there for me. iPad app? Really? That might be more useful if Sony had done the smart thing and ported Vegas over to Mac a few years ago--say, during that first year when FCPX was nothing more than a sad joke before the modules got released to return it to being usable....
Anyway, from my standpoint there's now really new Vegas info on Sony's site--just today's press release, which was a big helping of "meh!"
As noted by others, Americans, as a whole don't consider four blocks down to be "next door." I suspect you had a semi-disgruntled employee who gave very imprecise directions, because he wasn't getting the sale, so to perdition with you!
Looking forward to your next update!
Oh, next Vegas hint--tell your male staff not to get suckered into "party pit" games--that's where they have the scantily clad dancer behind the dealer, or just have a scantily-clad dealer.... Inevitably, in those games, the hotels have changed the odds against the player on the excuse of paying the dancers. Changing a Blackjack payoff from 1.5:1 to 1:1 adds up over time....

    Hi!
I understand that press release might be disappointing, but let me quote one of the SCS programmers:

What the soundbites don't say is that we've fixed a HUGE number of stability bugs since Vegas 12 was first released in September 2012. Many of those fixes are already present in VP12 b770, since we don't hold back bugs for new releases. For those of you who have called for stability before features, I hope that you'll really love VP13 and notice that we've been listening.
    (...)
Along these lines, we've made a noteworthy upgrade for VP13 that hopefully will be largely invisible to you: we're using a much newer C++ compiler and we're using .NET4. Both of those make it much easier to diagnose crash reports (plus, they've given Vegas a modest but measurable speed boost).

    source: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=888234
message from Chris Dolan's, on 3/31/2014 10:42:24 PM- unfortunately no way to link the post directly- you have to scroll down manually to the post.
Sometimes a lot of effort is not visible at the first glance nor is suitable for the press release :)

    Marcin--Thank you for that information.
I was speaking with a friend tonight, and were commenting that the most important thing for Vegas 13 is addressing stability issues, and that the new features are certainly useful, but certainly geared to a production workflow outside what I do (hence, my "to me."). And, of course, general speed boosts are always welcome.
I look forward to seeing reviews of Vegas once released to see if real world testers experience speed increases and stability improvements. And, while I'll complain at times about upgrades and features, the bottom line is still that I've used Vegas since version 1, and it's my NLE of personal choice for it's unique, speedy workflow. :-)
I stand by the Mac port comment. I feel Sony has made a business error in not porting to Mac, and think that, when FCPX launched to a huge wave of negative reviews (The best logline: "With FCPX Apple removes all professional editing features from it's professional editing software." Sony had a huge opportunity to gain Mac market share during that first year.
After all, the Mac port seems to have worked out for Hitfilm. ;-)

Now be nice to Utah and Idaho... I live in Utah right up against the Idaho border. We're really not that bad...  :D
If you're really looking to become wife #9, you take a right off Interstate 15 in St. George and head over to Hildale/Colorado City. They can take care of you. It's a strange place to drive through. What look like large condominiums are actually single family dwellings.
Wish I could sneak down to NAB and meet the team, but it's a 9 hour drive and I'm taking time off next week to attend FanX in Salt Lake City.

Well, like I said in my last post, NAB hit us pretty hard. It's all very well filling your days with walking around the convention centre but when you have meetings as well it can get pretty hectic. In fact, so hectic that I have barely had time to really delve into the stands. I have however just had time to write this MONSTER forum post. Gird your loins because this post is really a sleep deprived frenzy.
As some of you may know, the buzz word at NAB this year is 4K. It's everywhere - virtually every camera manufacturer is now producing a 4K camera, and those that aren't are at a disadvantage. With that in mind, the main shocker and frontrunner of NAB 2014 is Black Magic. Going to the stand is like throwing yourself into an oddly civilised pit of animals. Subtle elbow digs and loud sighs are common as everyone tries to get a picture of the newest camera which appears to have blown everything else out of the water. Josh (FXHOME) was positively giddy when he got back to us and explained "the wonders he had seen". So I knew the first thing I had to do today was go to the stand and see what all the fuss was about. Because it's such an incredible camera with a mind blowing price tag, I thought it'd be best to put together a small blog post dedicated to the Black Magic URSA camera and so that'll appear in a bit along with some pictures from the floor (which I literally had to fight for, so please take a look at. I almost lost a thumb).
Yesterday the FXHOME team split up for a few hours and then came back together for Tom's first presentation on the Sony stand. He had a bit of a shock when he began to explain to the crowd that he had 20 minutes, only to be told that he had an hour. However, not to be put off he launched himself into all of our example projects and was rewarded with really high interest: virtually all the seats were taken up and we had a lot of interesting questions from the audience afterwards when we went back to the Creative Studio Suite to showcase the software. Sony were filming the presentation and so we'll hopefully get our mitts on that later for you all to have a look at.
Just some of the other stands I visited in depth were Canon, who early in the morning were presenting a panel of directors including Dallas Sterling, Carlos de Andrade and Richard Crudo. The presentation was called "the economics of shooting 4K" and as all guest speakers were high end directors shooting both movies and film series, their insights were really interesting. For example they mentioned that using 4K for some of them was actually easier and better for their workflow than spending those extra few minutes changing lenses, and it also allows you more flexibility in your post-production shots.
An interesting trick of the trade which went down well with the audience was offered up by Dallas Sterling who suggested that he preferred to shoot in anamorphic, use the overspill (e.g. the imagery on the right and left of the shot they really want) to give them as much material to work with in terms of tracking - and then just slice off the excess afterwards. Giving him a beautiful 4K shot with an optimum amount of tracking data.
Panasonic's new Varicams also were going down well - the new Varicam 35 which records 4K, UHD, 2K and HD, and the Varicam HS which is optimised for high speeds and developed for sports recordings and documentaries. The modular concept for these Varicams is what makes them the most exciting - they have a recording module on the back which can be easily removed for tricky shots where you need a lighter camera or simply to make the process of file transfer easier. It also means that upgrades should be cheaper as you won't need to buy a whole camera each time.
A few feet-numbing hours later we stumbled out of the NAB convention centre, stumbled into the hotel and got ready for our dinner with Sony (pictures of which are on Twitter) then continued to stumble around until we got to the FXHOME meetup. We'd originally planned the West Wing bar but in person it was much more difficult to find and dingy than it looked on the internet (the dangers of researching Las Vegas from Norwich!) so we transferred to the TAP sports bar. Luckily because our community are so active on Twitter, they got our messages and came over to meet us there.
We were really pleased to finally meet @RodyPolis who has been an FXHOME product user since 2006 - so since he was about 14, and who has been an active member of the community and great tutorial and stock footage maker in his own right. He was soon joined by @keegan who brought along his friends, HitFilm Express users from his "uni".
But what made the evening really special was the appearance of @CorridorDigital's Sam and Niko (along with their friend Josh) who have been friends of FXHOME since they used AlamDV themselves - and who have now established themselves as huge YouTube stars. You know that "Superman with a GoPro"? Yup, that was them.
So after many drinks, many hours, more than a few embarrassing incidents, a narrow avoidance of the giant colourful castle Excalibur and some great company we bid adieu to the extended HitFilm family and wandered back to the hotel at about 2:30am. Sorry for those of you who weren't able to make it, but we're really hoping to make meetups more of a "thing"and so perhaps there will be another chance sometime soon!
4 hours later and we were back up, raring to go for another packed day at NAB! *realises how much she's written and cringes*. I'll be uploading more photos when the internet is a little better here so keep an eye on that dropbox! :)
Anything else you want to know?

That's quite an agenda for one day! Is time flying because you're having fun? :P
How did you almost lose a thumb?
Your day sounds better than mine except for that thumb thing. I came home to find a squirrel on top of my refrigerator! - long story short- It chewed a hole in a wall over the winter- I knew it was there for a couple months but had no way to chase it away until the weather got nicer (yes, I'm too cheap to hire an exterminator/eradicator if I think I can do it myself). It was under the upstairs floor and above the basement ceiling so I heard it once in a while underneath the bathtub. So, I tried amonia to drive it away. It worked- it went right for another hole in the basement ceiling and found its way upstairs. My stepdad and I got it out through the back door, which I propped open, and then blocked the hole so it can't get back in again. When the weather's nicer we'll do better fix on it.
The strangest thing, my cats acted as if nothing were wrong when I got home yesterday. Could the squirrel have outwitted my cats?!?!?!?! Or were the cats just uninterested? lol
Sorry- rambling now. Looking forward to the Black Magic post!
  • KirstieTKirstieT Staff Administrator, Moderator, Website User Posts: 1,056 Staff
I guess the thumb wasn't that awful StormyKnight - I just rested my hand on the glass case for a moment while I was looking around, and someone slammed a huge great camera on my thumb. Profanity followed.

But it sounds like nothing compared to your squirrel story! That did make me laugh :)
The Black Magic post will be up soon - I went to talk to the guys at the Black Magic stand who were really helpful and pointed out all of the features that you would all be most interested, so I'll get that up and running as soon as I get a spare moment.

In terms of the team, FXHOME made it all the way to Thursday and are now going to have a slap up dinner and a drink as a reward. Nothing saps you of energy like a thousand booths and a limited time!

I'm going to use my time on the plane to write this next one most likely so stay tuned :D

Darn squirrel got back in. Time for live traps- catch and release in a park far away from my house. That's much more than four blocks down. ;)

Hmmm could FXhome buy Vegas from Sony?  I know that's like a littler snake eating a big deer that is currently in the mouth of a Bear that is intent to bleed that deer dry before it rips its head off... but hey stranger things have happened.  Like a little accessory maker buying a color grading software, offering a version for free, releasing cameras for indie filmmakers.
Think The Mandarin's voice from Iron Man 3 saying "They'll never see it coming."
