Hitfilm is annoyingly slow

Hitfilm is a great NLE. I really enjoy its wide variety of features, its all-in-one package, etc. But it has always been a tad slow. It's not insufferably slow, but it's just irritatingly slow. Playback can get choppy when certain effects are applied, or if layers are blended over each other. I really need a smoother video editor with decent keyframing and a wide array of effects. Any suggestions?
