Adding Camera Shake to Digital Scene

Hey guys! I experimented a bit with this cool simple technique, and decided to make a quick tutorial about it. I think it's a great way to add a handheld look to your FX shots.

Great idea, simple and effective.

Nice! Great idea.

Wouldn't it be simpler to film the actual background handheld, then just track it and apply the tracking data to the phone layer?
The method you demonstrate works fine, but seems to add an additional step. -
If you do actually film the background, for sure, but in my case I only had pictures to work with so I needed to get the tracking data from something else. Also if your scene is all CG (a spaceship flying in space, for example), you would have to do it this way since you can't actually go film it in space.

For all-CG, I have a trick I intend to play with that I will share because it's similar in concept to what this last mini-tutorial is:
Basically, I am going to mocha track a shot, import that into Hitfilm and delete the video layer, leaving the tracking data. If you camera solve in mocha, then go back and quickly track particular points in the shot as reference points for setting up the CG (like how axel solved a shot, then went back and tracked a hand for his energy ball tutorial), then export those nulls to set up your shot...
Good tip, Rody! I see where Axel was coming from in noting that tracking a second piece of footage was an extra step, but think for tutorial purposes it was smart to do it that way, since it shows the viewers you can always take data from footage X and apply it to footage Y. -
Short and sweet tutorial with a great tip
Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey, Rody. Interesting tip. I'll have to bookmark this topic so I can try it in the future when I get to the point of having CG backgrounds. Thanks!

I love your great Ideas - Fantastic Tutorial.

Thanks Grisby!

This works great. Now I can film myself, and everybody thinks someone else hold the cam.
