I'm doing a music & sfx mix in the timeline -- why are the sliders fighting me?

It's a bit nuts -- if I play the timeline and I have the blue circle clicked in the audio channel slider,  why is the slider trying to move on it's own and  not taking my moves instead?   Clicking blue means the slider animates -- ie, moves like I moved it last time around.  If I want to make a change, it jumps away from under my cursor.

Also -- I'm getting jumpy sound when I move an audio level slider in animate/record moves mode -- the playback is okay afterwards.  A known bug?

Here is the video in which Axel describes how to create keyframe-type events for the audio sliders:

His use scenario has users setting audio volume events by starting and stopping the playback.  I want to be able to mix & move sliders on the fly, but they're not easy to move, and in some cases they're not easily kept in place under the cursor (when the mouse button is clicked)  ie when previous audio keyframes have been set.  The help file does not provide clear instructions.
