How to spawn an image behind text without obscuring the text?

I have a sequence with text on my screen. I would like an image to appear behind the text, without the image obscuring the text. Instead I would like the text to remain superimposed on the image.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Put the image below the text in the layer stack.

Layers/tracks are processed from the bottom-up.

... and if you would like it to appear over time, keyframe the opacity from 0 to 100.

The background of my film is white, I have also made a composite shot of a black and white clip, I have made a mask of the part I want to keep in the clip and have been trying to mask out all the surrounding edges of the clip, I  want to make them white so they blend in with the white background, I know it’s something to do with the add and subtract in the masks but I can't work out the sequence. Anyone out there who can help me please.]
