I've heard it talked about, but just how versatile/flexible is it?

I'm on a tight budget right now, but i can get the AV pack for 12.50$ USD or the 3DPS for 25.00$USD.

Tutorials/advice on the AP for a sim?

Atomic Particles cannot substitute for the particle sim in any manner. It does completely different things than the particle sim. This goes both ways. Atomic particles does things the particle sim cannot do.

As for tutorials: Try clicking the menu on this website (upper right corner of page),  choose video tutorials, and then browse the particle sim list or search the video tutorials for atomic particles. Or to the FxHome Youtube channel and do the same thing. Browse the particle sim playlist or search for Atomic Particles.
