The secret Life Of Walter Mitty visual FX

[attachment=673:movie picture.jpg]There is an effect in the trailer of this movie (the 2:36 version that comes in between 2:07-2:09) that I know they are using a particle simulator on and maybe a masking technique. They somehow get the simulated birds to create the image of a face. Any ideas on how this effect is cre one working link for this movie isated?

Get the face you want to use on a separate layer form everything else, apply atomic particles to it, and then use a Bird texture for the particles.  That would be the easiest way to do it in HitFilm.  Starting with a black-and-white sketch-like appearance for the face, and eliminating the white via alpha channel would probably get you closest to the exact appearance used in the trailer, but atomic particles are the way to go any time you want to control the overall pattern of a particle system.
I love the 1947 version of this story, starring Danny Kaye.  From the looks of the trailers, the new one has butchered the story pretty badly.  Hopefully its not as bad as it looks.
  • Thanks a lot Axe! I will try it out and let you know how it comes out. :)

I'll be really interested to see whether or not you'll be able to pull this off - please post it here if you do! This film doesn't come out for a while in the UK but I've heard it's going to be interesting viewing...

Can atomic particles use image sequence texture, as particle simulator can do (use a layer as animated)? If so, it would be awesome. If not, the birds might seem abit pathetic without flapping their wings. If there are enough birds, the illusion might wirk anyways.

Here is a variation of the effect which I created yesterday while experimenting.  I used a super-basic 5-frame animation for the birds, which could definitely use some work to get a better result, but the concept seems to be working:

That's pretty cool--and it certainly answers the question about using animated particles with atomic.
  • Yup, that's pretty much it. Awesome job. Still tweeking mines a bit. Now that I've looked at yours, I really have to shape mines up lol. Thanks for the sample.

Here's a revised version of the effect, which Is getting to the point where I'm pretty happy with it.  This one uses four separate Atomic layers, each with different timing on the animated textures and different atomic settings, to add more depth and variety.
