It depends on the type of the video. I mean, if it's a let's play video series and You don't want to add any effects just cut the raw video then it is not the best choice for You. If it's a review or a machinima perhaps You may need the power of Hitfilm to add some spectacular effects, titles and other enhancements.

Hitfilm 3 Express is more than good enough to edit gaming videos, and has optional add-on packs for sale if you become inspired.
One thing about gaming videos--most screen caps are encoded at a variable frame rate. This causes problems with Hitfilm if you don't do a couple things first.
This thread discusses the problem and offers three ways to fix it.
Follow the advice there and Hitfilm will work nicely.
