So Imagineer is hosting a free webinar training on 4/24 to help people learn Mocha AE. Now we don't use Mocha AE but here are the topics its covering
- Starting a project and sending footage to mocha AE
- Basics of Planar Tracking
- Understanding Export Settings
- Understanding Shear & Perspective Motion
- How to apply tracking within After Effects
- Which workflow to use when
- How to use mochaImport+ tool to assist your After Effects workflow.

Awesome, thanks for the heads-up. Also, to clarify, the interface and functionality of Mocha AE and Mocha HitFilm are very, very similar, so for the actual tracking process, everything covered there should be directly applicable for us. Its just the start and end bits, when coming out of AE and going back into AE, that will require a little bit of translation to fit into Hitfilm. Even in those bits, the process is basically the same, I believe, but some of the nomenclature will be different.

Thanks Michael!

Thanks for the info Michael. I have AE CS5 w/Mocha but I haven't really
gotten into AE like HF2U.....probably because the learning curve isn't as steep
and well.......I just love HF2U.
Maybe they'll make it available on their website when it's over. -
I am so glad this tutorial is coming up... I've had nothing but issues trying to make Mocha Hitfilm work and its consistently discouraged me from trying to usa mocha. Tried to use some stock footage to track a shot today and im just getting nothing but frustrated.
-
Same here Michael, my luck's been iffy. Tried with some of my own footage, then used some from a link someone posted with greenscreen and marks, with a moving (dolly?) camera - no luck for me, even though I feel like I understand how it is 'supposed' to work

I took advantage of video blocks promotions where you can register with them and get free 7 day access to their footage(limit 20 downloads a day) used it for a couple days and cancelled. Was not really impressed because its no substitute for Action Essentials 2. I got this shot of the statue of liberty from the view of a helicopter.

I kinda like when I see videos of 3d camera trackers where they just run it and then a million points pop up and you can just pick one and parent it.

The webinar is happening live right now, but the recording of will apparently also be posted on Vimeo and YouTube after it is completed, for those of you who are interested but can't catch the live broadcast.

The webinar just finished up. Most of it didn't apply to Hitfilm Mocha directly (looks like Mocha bundled with AE doesn't support camera tracking), but was still very informative.
I found the "how to see" part interesting since it gave a very good explanation of what Mocha considers to be shear and perspective. I also found the stabilized precomp in AE very interesting. Would love to see something like this in HF
They did mention that they plan to put the webinar online in a few days.
Thanks again Michael for posting this.
Looks like they plan to do more of these, so hopefully they will do a HF one.

@rgbii I put doing one of these for hitfilm in their suggestions for next time section of their webinar survey. I had to watch it at work but loved it. Imagineer systems said they do monitor some outside forums... lets see if we can get Hitfilm added to the list.
-
Was a really good webinar. I would like to see the Mocha AE features brought to Mocah Hitfilm... Particularly the Roto/Mask parts. Being able to simply track something in 2d and be able to export it as a mask in Hitfilm would be awesome.
-
The webinar seemed to focus more on the various methods for moving footage between mocha and AE, rather than the actual tracking process.. So it was less applicable than I had hoped it would be, but there was still some useful stuff there.
And MichaelJames, the mocha folks do occasionally post here on the forums, so I think they are watching. -
I figured they were building up to tracking and camera solving - I was surprised when towards the end they mentioned that the Mocha bundled with AE didn't support camera solving. Sounds like y'all may have worked out a better deal with them than the AE people

After Effects seems to be a lot of money for not that much.

After Effects seems to be a lot of money for not that much.
After Effects also has its own (and very good) 3d camera tracker -
I found a script that allows me to transfer my camera directly between Blender and my primary animation software. And Blender recently added a planar tracker to complement the point tracker they already had. So without a way to sync the HitFilm camera for animation, Mocha HF isn't going to do that much for me anyway.
I plan on focusing on how to learn to use Blender's planar tracking.
But I did try tracking with Mocha HF and used footage that gave point trackers no problem. I followed the tutorial's advice and hit the same frustrating roadblocks you guys seem to have. -
Okay... i'm not alone with that Problems... and i thought, i'm just too stupid, to understand everything...

Just to clarify, the processes used in that Digital Makeup tutorial won't include the 3D camera solver, and thus don't translate directly to mocha HitFilm. Some points discussed might be applicable, but I doubt the general workflow will be HitFilm relevant.
