I've been experimenting more with model compositing and re-did this clip with distance fog. I figured it out from Axle's tutorial:

I also added smoke coming out of the engines and altered the ships engine sound.

Here is another atomic particles test. I'm working towards using atomic particles to be part of a "portal" effect.

Fantastic. Love it.
-
Thanks!

That is fantastic...... love the detail and feel of the shot. Would love to see more indepth how you created the surrounding environment - starfield with those wisks.
Did you have any limitations on how far you could position those and how far they stretched across 3D space? -
Very, very cool. Where did you get the 3D model?
-
Reminds me of Babylon 5 - really great work !

Thanks! For the background stars I found a huge pic of a star field and then turned it into an environment map. Then I added the "dust" using the particle simulator and Simons new tutorial for "chaff" in the wheat-field. The main difference is that I made the size of the box emitting the particles about 4 or 5 times bigger than the one in the tutorial. Then I used one of the built in Ember textures which have kind of a blurred, smeary look to them.

Thanks! I got it from Foundation 3d. Its a great site and all these models are free. They are hit and miss. Some wont even open correctly in hitfilm but, some look awesome. You have to become a member to download models.

The model in this shot is huge. It has more than 1 million polygons and when I loaded it into hitfilm, the model by itself, caused the software to start chugging. (This model comes in 5 pieces and I assembled it using the info from Simons tutorial on importing models). My computer isnt the fastest, btw. But, I had to make this scene with all the lighting effects & motion blur turned off. I even usually had the model turned off for a lot of it. 500 mb file size! And then the longest render I've ever had. 19 hours to render 30 seconds of video. -
Thanks for the info! Hoping it will help resolve some issues in my current project.

Those are some very curious and stylish 3D models! Assuming that's what they are?
-
They are 3d models. I know, they look cool and random! They were called "virus", which is what I ended up titling the video. I'm working on 3d environments for the upcoming fan film.

This is a re-working of a space nebula shot I made in February 2012 that was made from the corresponding tutorial. It's interesting to go back and look at how I set things up and organized them back then (which was badly). So, I fixed it up, revamped it and added rocketships.

I shot a short using the tilt shift effect on my Olympus camera.

I revisited and made improvements to my ident. Better lighting, a different font and I altered the camera move a bit.

A little classic BSG.

Nice.

I whipped up a submission for the Film Riot, HitFilm Challenge. My first attempts at planar tracking (thanks for the tutorials Axel!) and Atomic Particles are the main ingredients.

Thanks!

A short clip using the skull that Simon linked in another thread. The detail was so high on the model I wanted to do a fly over of it.

You've given that shot a real sense of giant scale. The undulations around the 1 minute mark are cool.

Thanks! Yeah, originally the whole video was from outside of the object (like at the 1:00 mark) and then I realized it looked better when you are inside it.
Lots of Mocha tracking shot tests coming soon... -
Here is a new one based on another thread in this forum. jonesbros made a 3d model of a Boeing and I got inspired by it.

Great stuff. I mentioned how awsome the teleportation video is in the original thread.
My favorite is the flyby of gigantic space cruiser. I like the way you added subtle shake to make a static shot feel more interesting. The use of the clouds really helps to make it look realistic.
How about a little weapons fire in that BSG clip. I kept waitng for the viper to blow the cylone right out of space.... -

Thanks! Yeah, I really do need to make the BSG clip into a dog fight.
