mkv can't be played on nook hd

I went to download some files last night, they are .mkv movies. When I transfer them to my new Nook HD+, it errors out, saying “The file cannot be played”. What’s wrong?

Sounds like the files aren't compatible with your device. Not surprising, since MKV isn't compatible with a lot of things. You need to convert it to mov, or mp4 or whatever Nook's use.
I fail to see why you would register to post this here, and not go look on Barnes & Noble's support...
    http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/NOOK-Support/379003184/
  • Nook HD/HD+ supported media formats are:
Audio: MP4, M4A, 3GP, AAC, MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, AMR
    Video: MP4, 3GP, WEBM, AVI
Gallery pictures: JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP
Reader/Other: PDF, ePUB, DRP, ePIB, FOLIO, OFIP, CBZ, TXT, RTF, XLS, DOC, PPT, PPS, PPSX, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, LOG, CSV, EML, ZIP
You will notice there is no .mkv listed, so conversion is needed. I used to convert my recorded videos using Pavtube Video Converter ( http://www.pavtube.com/video_converter/ ) and transfer to my Nook HD, which has the Nook HD video format, I don’t change any settings and the output videos play smoothly on the tablet.
